It was a frigid and windy day of open houses. Coming to the West Village from Harlem, I desperately needed a bite before my next showing at 218 West 10th St, 6F. A short search and a strong gust of wind brought me through the doors of Fairfax. Stepping inside, I was greeted by friendly staff and a wall of posters and shelves of taxidermy. The tranquil atmosphere made me want to linger just a little longer.
Part of the Happy Cooking Hospitality family, Fairfax fits perfectly into the West Village’s charm, a neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and vibrant dining scene. Fairfax is an unpretentious slice of the area, blending cool with comfort. The intimate setting was abuzz with the hum of conversation and the gentle clink of glasses, an inviting contrast to the blustery streets.
As I settled at the bar, John, the bartender, handed me the menu. I was between the Cubano and the Whitefish but ultimately took the suggestion of their signature Bar Sardine burger. Despite the name, there’s no seafood here—but you'll be hooked ;). The patty was plump and perfectly juicy, topped with paper-thin red onion slices and zesty pickle chips. The smashed-flat buns were soft and enveloping. On the first bite, the burger's bold flavors dealt my tastebuds a sexy uppercut. The molten cheese and signature sauce add brightness and depth to the burger's flavor profile.
To accompany the sandwich, I chose Old Bay tots. Crispy beyond the point of perfection, the golden nuggets disintegrated with each bite. The dusting of Old Bay was subtle enough to add taste but not over salt. The combination of the burger and tots was unexpectedly light but immensely satisfying—a meal that left me energized rather than weighed down.
Executive Chef James McDuffee has crafted a menu that keeps people coming back. Fairfax is just one part of the Happy Cooking Hospitality brand, and after this experience, I’m eager to explore more of their offerings. This wasn’t just a meal but a reason to return to the West Village and make Fairfax a regular stop.
Fairfax isn’t the only reason to visit this iconic neighborhood. The West Village is steeped in history, with stunning pre-war buildings and a cultural scene that’s as vibrant as its dining options. It’s one of the most desirable areas for homebuyers in New York City. If you’re considering making it your home, my open house at 218 West 10th St, 6F, might be just the opportunity you’re looking for—and yes, it’s just a short stroll from Fairfax.
Whether you’re a foodie exploring the city or searching for your dream home, the West Village offers something unique. As an agent with Cooper & Cooper, I’d be happy to help you find your perfect spot. But first, treat yourself to a meal at Fairfax. Tell them Conrad sent you.
