Homeless Persons' Memorial Day

In a city as vibrant as New York, it’s heartbreaking to note that over 60,000 people sleep in shelters each night, and thousands more endure the cold streets without a roof over their heads. Today, December 21, marks Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day and the longest night of the year—a poignant reminder of the devastating toll of homelessness in our community.

In this powerful reflection, Donnell Williams, President of the Black Real Estate Professionals Alliance (BREPA), calls on us to remember those lost to homelessness and challenges us to take action. As a proud member of BREPA, we share this message to recommit ourselves to the fight for housing justice. Let’s work toward a future where everyone has the dignity of a safe and stable home.

Today, December 21, the longest night of the year, we reflect on the lives lost to homelessness and recommit to the fight for housing justice.

On Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, we honor the memory of those who passed away while living unhoused. Behind every statistic is a human story — someone’s child, parent, friend, or neighbor.

This day serves as a sobering reminder that far too many in our communities face the harsh reality of homelessness, especially on nights like this. As president of the Black Real Estate Professionals Alliance, I am reminded of our mission to create pathways to homeownership, equity, and stability for all, particularly for underserved communities.

A home is more than four walls — it is safety, dignity, and hope. Let today inspire us to take meaningful action, advocate for systemic change, and ensure that no one is left without a place to belong.

May we honor their memory by building a future where everyone has a home.
